Current HSBC NewsA History of HSBC Bank Nevada, N.A.Do you really know what the HSBC credit card stands for? Amazingly, it is named after one of its founding members the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank of Commerce, which was developed by a Scottish man named Thomas Sutherland in 1865. The HSBC bank’s original purpose was to finance British trade in the Far East. Not only does HSBC take third place in banking ratings, but also it falls as the fifth largest company in the world. HSBC Group’s head office is located in London.
HSBC Group separates its banking business into four distinct categories: personal financial services, commercial banking, corporate/investment banking and markets and private banking. Through the personal financial services HSBC offers things like HSBC credit cards, pensions, investments and savings accounts. Partnerships, sole proprietors and incorporated businesses, or medium sized and middle market enterprises, make up HSBC’s commercial banking. Corporate banking consists of corporate and institutional clients, which provide things such as Global Banking, Global Research and Global Markets. Private banking exists for wealthier, or high net worth, people and families. Republic New York Corporation, The Bank of Bermuda and Safra Republic Holdings are just a few of the companies that belong to HSBC’s private banking.
Through its birth, HSBC was initially produced to help finance the trade between China and Europe. In 1866, another branch was opened in Japan. And, in 1874, HSBC made the first public loan in China. Beginning in 1876 and for twenty-six years thereafter, Thomas Jackson was president of HSBC and watched HSBC become Asia’s major bank. Up until 1935, HSBC experienced a great transformation by becoming the major bank for the Hong Kong government in the 1880's and expanding to other areas such as Bangkok, Manila and Shanghai.
During World War II, HSBC’s main office in Hong Kong was used for military purposes and forced HSBC to move the office to London until 1946 when it moved back to Hong Kong. The Chief Manager Michael Turner wanted to make changes during his term beginning in 1953. During his time, HSBC bought The British Bank of the Middle East and the Mercantile Bank. Likewise, Turner assisted in developing the HSBC based in California in 1955. In 1962, Jake Saunders took over HSBC, and HSBC continued to grow by purchasing the Hang Seng Bank and developing Wardley Limited.
By 1980, Michael Sandburg was heading HSBC. During his time, the USA Bank Marine Midland Bank was acquired by HSBC, and The Hongkong Bank of Australia Limited was developed in 1986. Finally, in 1991, the HSBC Holdings plc was developed in order to manage the various groups. Today, one can find HSBC banks not only right here in the United States, but also in many cities and countries such as France, Turkey, Jarkarta, Canada, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
