A Short History of American ExpressUnlike other financial institutions during the start of World War I in 1914, American Express kept individuals and foreign banks supplied with money after other banks quit cashing any paper form of monetary means. During the time of war, American Express stood up to its standard by delivering packages to various countries and cash to people who were prisoners of war. In the next decades, American Express became not only a popular banking industry, but also a top rated travel industry providing travel agencies and controlling the United States railroad business.
Throughout the years, American Express has shared in the world of purchasing competitor financial institutions such as the massively large security firm Shearson Loeb Rhoades Inc. and buying credit card portfolios from banks such as the Bank of Hawaii. Additionally, American Express has partnered with other financial institutions, Citibank and GE Money to name a couple, to issue American Express Cards. While American Express has had its share of hard times, American Express has also been there for consumers and the country during hard times, including the horrific aftermath of 9/11/01.
